Sometimes amazing opportunities come along in Airport Retail. In October 2018, Sukitha went from a Promotional Consultant to becoming a Synergy Promotions Brand Ambassador for the Global Drinks company Pernod Ricard in Terminal 4, London Heathrow. Suki is a well respected member of the team who has worked hard and done very well so he was the perfect person to find out about what being a Brand Ambassador means to him.
Q. What made you apply to work for Synergy Promotions in Heathrow Airport?
I previously worked for another company in Heathrow and heard many great things about Synergy Promotions. I personally thought that Synergy would provide me with a great platform to improve my skill set and also give me exposure to new opportunities, which it did!
Q. What does a typical day as a Brand Ambassador consist of?
The day is always jam packed with a lot of duties and responsibilities, you could be checking stock, doing tasting sessions and generally making sure that the brand is always being looked after in your location. You are the face of the brand, so you have to be passionate and always on your game. Most of the day is spent helping customers to fulfil their needs. I enjoy the interaction and educating passengers on the different whiskey’s and meeting lots of different people each day.
Q. What has been your favourite part of your BA role so far?
My favourite part has been learning different facts about my products. It amazes me how much there is to learn about the products which makes me more confident to serve my clients.
Q. Have you spotted anyone famous travelling through Heathrow?
Meeting many celebrities has been another perk of this job. I recently met Willian Da Silva from Chelsea Football Club which was very cool!
Q. What advice would you give someone who was new to the airport environment?
The airport environment can be overwhelming at first, my advice would be take it slowly, get to know the products, ask as many questions as possible and get to know the rest of the Synergy team.
Q. What are the positives & negatives about working in the airport?
Every day at the airport seems like a brand new day as the airport environment refreshes itself. The airport provides opportunities to learn something new every day too. Heathrow airport is one of the busiest airports in the world and I find it an honour to work here. If you are not a people person you might find the role difficult as you have to interact with new people every day.
Q. What qualities do you think it takes to become a brand ambassador for a liquor brand?
I think you have to be passionate about the brands you sell. The passion will drive you to learn more and more so that you can identify each customer needs and to serve them accordingly. Passion runs alongside with knowledge about the product. The more knowledge you have about the product the better you can sell the products to the clients. You have to be well groomed as you are the face of the brand and you need to be confident.
